From 12-29 September, High Street Project is exhibiting the work of Christchurch-based artist Kate McIntyre.Over the cold Cantabrian winter, McIntyre has been working away in the garage of her flat de-constructing and fabricating the gallery environment.

McIntyre's art revolves around architecture, space and light. She recognises that a gallery is an artificial situation and a construction. It contains few benign objects, a light switch, a doorstop, and when you enter the floorboards and the white-painted walls provide the desired lack of situation. It's intentionally lost itself.

The walls and floor are so visible that they're invisible. Our eyes are trained to focus on what is infrequent instead of what lies in abundance. For Lost In Space, McIntyre has turned the search lights on and a new space is emerging out of the woodwork.

McIntyre makes work which moves and alters as you do, slowly revealing or hiding itself as your relative position changes. Highlighting that which has been overshadowed by its environment she allows the viewer to rediscover meaning in what surrounds us; or perhaps more light-heartedly than that, she shows those hidden blatancies a little bit of playful attention.

Kate McIntyre graduated from University of Canterbury's School of Fine Arts in 2005 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture. She was part of a joint exhibition, Elsewhere, with Kirstein McKendry at High Street Project in 2005, and has also exhibited at The Physic Room's Kiosk space in 2007.
