Going West Books & Writers is the annual literary festival that takes place in Waitakere City. Now in its ninth year, the 2004 festival runs from 3rd to 19th September and has something for the whole family.

It kicks off with Word Up! on the 3rd, an evening aimed at 15-18 year old performers of theatre, dance, music, poetry and comedy. On the 4th we have a day long market for second-hand, rare and hand-made books and a Poetry Slam with cash prizes in the evening. The main literary weekend, opening on the 10th, is a celebration of the kiwi writing sspirit and features established and emerging writers. Storyfest, on the 18th, transforms the Kelston Community Centre into a magical setting where everyone can delight in the power of words and stories. The Going West steam train trip is a wonderful mix of location, locomotion and literature for a uniquely Waitakere experience. The train chugs out of Auckland central at 9.30am on Sunday 19th.
