Te reo Maori is unique to New Zealand and recent research has shown that attitudes and beliefs about te reo Maori have changed and there is now more support for the language from the wider public.The challenge ahead is to encourage greater use of te reo in domains such as at work, shopping and when playing sports and in social settings.
The concept of NZ Reo, NZ Pride, introduces the use of Reo - Language, a word many kiwi are familiar with, it also attempts to capture the 'pride' New Zealanders have as a nation. For example, when the All Blacks perform the Haka.
Goals of Maori Language Week
Encourage non-Maori speaking New Zealanders to use te reo Maori.
Encourage speakers of Maori to support others who are just starting out.
Encourage community, business, government and media organisations to participate.
Create a positive environment for the use of Maori language.
Promote resources to make Maori language more accessible.
Promote Maori language initiatives and events.
Contribute to the wider national Maori language strategy.
Maori Language Week has been celebrated since 1975 and is an important opportunity to promote te reo Maori to all New Zealanders.
