Sadly, the highly respected Ngati Whatua Maori elder and Arts Foundation of New Zealand Trustee Sir Hugh Kawharu has passed away. Sir Hugh was a brilliant advisor to the Arts Foundation, and was a much loved inspiration and mentor to The Big Idea team.

He will be mourned by many in the New Zealand arts community. We offer our sincere condolences to his whanau and to Ngati Whatua. Rest in Peace.

Sir Hugh Kawharu - our lossHe most recently provided Arts Foundation Trustees with the privilege of being guests at his Auckland Marae, Orakei, for a meeting in late July. On the same day, Sir Hugh arranged and hosted a hui with special guests to discuss the relevance of patronage for Maori.

The Arts Foundation was privileged to work with Sir Hugh. His wisdom provided a guiding light to the Foundation, adding depth to the Foundation's understanding of honour, so critical when awarding artists. His guidance ensured the Foundation found an appropriate place in relation to Maoridom from which it is growing.

The Trustees, Governors, Patrons and supporters of the Foundation will sadly miss Sir Hugh. Representatives of the Arts Foundation will pay their respects to Sir Hugh this Friday and are happy to take any messages to the Marae that day.
