This show brings together the work of five artists - Emma Smith, Graham Fletcher, Linda Holloway, Simon Esling and Tyler Fox - to create points of discussion around the term 'high density'.The title of this show commonly refers to crowded, multi-level housing, but it also carries a sense of `high anxiety'. Dense physicality becomes analogous to complex psychological anxiety.
Emma Smith's work employs macabre humour in the form of bombs, clubs and oversized cuts of meat that serve as stand-ins for our fears and anxieties.
Graham Fletcher's work considers the pressures of gravity through collapsed forms, while Linda Holloway utilises gravity to disperse viscous enamel paint to create microforms and astral-like spatial fields.
Both Simon Esling and Tyler Fox stage a more literal discussion of the theme of high-density housing and urban infrastructure through their respective 'burnt' paintings and looped video pieces. In its totality this show addresses the theme of 'high density' in a unique and cohesive way.
The Eclective is an artist run collective. As a community organisation our primary function is to exhibit, promote, and further develop locally based visual arts and new media work within Auckland city.
The Eclective aims to make new and innovative work more accessible to a wider audience and thus provide support for experimental artists. We will bring exposure to art practices that are multi-faceted in form, use a hybrid of media and that are resonant of our current cultural diversity.
