The Government's deferral of Section 92A of the Copyright Amendment Act for a month needs to be the prelude to a complete repeal, UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu MP Peter Dunne said today.

"The Government has taken a step in the right direction, but I don't believe that developing the Telecommunications Carriers' Forum Code of Practice will stop this poorly thought-out piece of legislation becoming a legal minefield," Mr Dunne said. "The Government has taken a step in the right direction, but I don't believe that developing the Telecommunications Carriers' Forum Code of Practice will stop this poorly thought-out piece of legislation becoming a legal minefield," Mr Dunne said. "I hope for the sake of internet users all over New Zealand, that this is simply a temporary reprieve for Section 92A, rather than an attempt to shepherd in the law at a later date.

"It seems ridiculous to maintain a law that no-one agrees with and then go to the trouble of trying to develop a workable code of practice when all anybody wants is for the whole thing to be abandoned," he said.

"I urge Justice Minister Simon Power to listen to New Zealanders who do not want their rights infringed by this legislation."

"The reality of the law as it stands is not acceptable. I don't believe it is fair for the Government to pass the buck on to ISPs and users," Mr Dunne said.
