Unwind for a day or a week, have fun and express yourself.The Driftwood & Sand event is a fantastic opportunity to make unique and wonderful works of art in a creative environment on beautiful Hokitika beach. You could also win one of the 3 great prizes as well as the coveted Driftwood & Sand pounamu and matai trophy. The winning entries are chosen by public vote so anyone can win. Driftwood & Sand is user-friendly, inclusive and promotes cooperation and a closer community.

This is a chance to relax and explore the beauty and potential of the beach as a source of material and inspiration and a chance for artists and lay-people to work along side sharing ideas and energy.

Driftwood & Sand happens along the Hokitika beach-front Sunday 1st - Sunday 8th February 2004 (the week before and including Waitangi weekend) to celebrate the beach and the freedom of expression.

Anything you make on the beach can be art. Anything on the beach can be used: sand, wood, jandals, Anything!

PRIZES of adventure and accomodation in amazing places for the best, most original and most ambitious creations.From Aoraki Ski Planes, White Heron Sanctuary Tours, Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Okarito Nature Tours, Scotts Cottage and the lovely Driftwood & Sand Trophy.

Small Print: All participants must comply with OSH standards regarding use of power tools etc. Use introduced materials only if they do not compromise the theme. Dangerous materials and pollutants i.e. glass and solvents are not allowed. Make sure observers stand at a safe distance at all times. If the work is left unattended nothing should be left in the area which poses a threat to the safety of the public. All care but no responsibility will be taken by organisers and participants are responsible for the security of their work/s. Participants take part at their own risk. Creations may be removed at the end of the competition or left on the beach for the public's enjoyment as long as their deterioration poses no threat to safety or the environment.
