Long Bay/Okura Peninsular, on the northern boundary of North Shore City, is under threat of disappearing under the continuous sprawl of urban Auckland. Over the last 10 years The Long Bay Great Park Society has been campaigning to save this land from urbanisation, with a vision to have it turned into a 'Great Park' for all of Auckland.Filmmaker Iain Hamilton-Gates has been following their cause for the last six years, and shot the documentary Awareness to raise the issue's profile.

"During my research one of the main problems facing Long Bay was the fact that not that many people knew about the problem or even knew exactly where it was, even though Long Bay regional park has over 1.5 million visitors per year," said Hamilton-Gates.

"One only needs to go there to realise what the future of the rural land behind the Long Bay Regional Park could be, depending on the outcome of an Environment court Hearing that commences 16th July 2007."

Awareness was made with the help of editor Aleksandar Janev, DOP James Rua, visual effects artist Giles Molly and narrator David Madigan.

"This is a totally self-funded project," said Hamilton-Gates, "and the aim is to make people aware of the situation, so that they too will want to get involved to save the last area of coastal land in the Auckland metropolitan region."
