Welby Ings has won two national awards for Tertiary Teaching Excellence including the Prime Minister's Supreme Award. He has won $50,000 in prizes.

"Every three years I try and leave teaching because the burnout can be severe, but I keep coming back in."Welby Ings, a former head of design at Western Springs College and now lead lecturer in graphic design at AUT said in the NZ Herald that the problem with New Zealand's design industry was that it trained up excellent graduates who did not always have the opportunity to use their talents in their home country. "When they say they're leaving, I'm happy for them, but grieve for my country."

Not only a top teacher, Welby Ings is a successful filmmaker who was recently offered a grant of $19,000 through Creative New Zealand's Screen Innovation Production Fund towards the production of a short film, "Boy".
