Dance resources

13 Apr 2016
Check out these resources to help create and promote dance events and build audiences.

The good people at DANZ have pulled together some of their favourite resources for putting on and promoting events. This was shared to celebrate their first NZ Dance Week in April, but can be used all year long!

Music Licensing - The Big Picture

Music is essential in dance classes, productions and shows, but you may have wondered about the copyright requirements of your music use, but weren’t sure who or what to ask. Emma Fleetwood, Theatrical Licensing Representative for APRA/AMCOS gives us some of the important information that you’ll need to know if you are a dance school, a dance company or an events venue.

Creating Great Dance or Movement for Musical or Community Theatre

This resource, by Dr Tania Kopytko, was written for the Creating great dance in Musical Theatre for all your cast choreographic workshop at the Musical Theatre NZ Conference in Christchurch, March 2015.

It covers four areas:

  • Dance and Movement health and safety relating to the new legislation
  • A summary of creating great movement
  • The context of dance and movement – understanding and avoiding some potential pitfalls
  • Approaches to Choreography – some tools and ideas to help you create great movement and dance

Maximising Promotions - Publicity Opportunities in Dance

This is a guideline by Sahra Grinham, for maximising your marketing activities – particularly promotions and publicity opportunities – and complements the DANZ resource Marketing Tips for Dance.

Due to tight production costs you will be looking at ways to get the most from your money and particularly the budget set aside for marketing and promotional purposes. While some publicity or editorial media coverage can be obtained for “free”, it is important to understand that this type of publicity is not guaranteed as it depends on external factors beyond your control whether or not it runs. In contrast, advertising (adverts, posters, flyers) is a more assured form of publicity because you pay for the placements – whether ads in the newspaper or posters pasted up around town.

Therefore, when planning your marketing activities try to have a balance and mix of both paid and free activities so that you know you are covered.

Building Dance Audiences with Social Media

This resource by Vicki Allpress Hill, comes from the social media workshop led by Vicki for DANZ on 21 May 2012.

Social media is an important tool for dance, enabling us to connect directly with our audiences, deliver real time information in a cost-effective way and make the most of the available tools to promote our visually beautiful art form.

This resource provides you with the key points covered in the workshop and provides you with an overview of ways to build dance audiences with social media. You can use it as a guide to what’s important to know and use the resources at the end or the many free resources available online to more deeply research any of the topics that interest you.

The resource is divided into three sections:

  1. Why is social media important to us?
  2. How do we approach social media strategically?
  3. Tips & Tricks for successful social media implementation.
