Industry New Zealand has appointed Dame Cheryll Sotheran, the founding Chief Executive of the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, as its Director, Creative Industries.

Neil Mackay says the role of Director, Creative Industries requires strategic leadership, co-ordination and facilitation with other agencies to develop industry, projects and investment opportunities.
The creative industries have been identified as a key growth sector in the New Zealand economy and are a central part of the Government's Growth and Innovation Framework.
Creative industries are defined as those industries that have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent, and that have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.
Industry New Zealand has a central role in facilitating the development of this key growth sector.
Dame Cheryll says she is excited by the challenge of the new role.
"I am passionate about the creative industries in New Zealand and the wonderful unique talent we have here," she says. "I look forward to the challenge of working with the sector to facilitate, enhance and develop its economic potential.
"Having worked in the creative sector over the years in a number of roles, I have strong existing networks. However, my new role will involve listening, learning and further enhancing those relationships."
