Gone is the quiet Sunday stroll around the local community hall and in its place arrives a crush of city slickers and apartment dwellers making a beeline for sophisticated St Kevin's Arcade.

Welcome to Craftwerk, outlet for handmade goods, and home of items meeting descriptions ranging from alternative, to lo-fi, to artschool.

"Craftwerk is a platform for young and emerging New Zealand creatives to show and sell their work in a fun and relaxed atmosphere away from the constraints of galleries and stores," says organiser and founder Sam Whetton. It introduces visitors to labels with intriguing names such as 'smelly ice-cream' and 'Ally Alley Oxen Free' and showcases artists who describe their work as "ugly yet endearingly cute".

Items for sale include anything from knitted toys to soft sculpture to laser-cut jewellery to zines, screen-printed stationery, painting and plastic casting.

The concept originated in Wellington and extended to Auckland in August this year where it has become a bi-monthly evening event. Craftwerk's final fair for 2006 will take place on Thursday, 7 December and is set to be the city's hot spot for creative Christmas gifts this season.
