Dunedin composer Gillian Whitehead has been appointed a Distinguished Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DCNZM) for services to music.

Whitehead's was one of many Queen's Birthday Honours awarded to the creative industries including arts, dance, design, music, literature, poetry and journalism.
