Contemporary New Zealand Photographers is a new exhibition and accompanying book celebrating 20 of this country's greatest photographers. The artists range from senior practitioners including Marti Friedlander, Anne Noble, Laurence Aberhart and Peter Peryer, mid-career photographers such as Gavin Hipkins and Fiona Pardington, through to young and emerging artists such as Ben Cauchi, Yvonne Todd and Edith Amituanai.

Porirua City - 1 March - 30 April 2006Today art photography in New Zealand is widely taught, collected, exhibited and discussed. At its cutting edge, this art form makes a strong contribution to New Zealand's active engagement with the international art world. Interest in photography has grown rapidly over the past decade in New Zealand, with many more collectors and practitioners entering the market. This exhibition, and accompanying book, offers New Zealanders and the rest of the world a glimpse of this controversial and ever-changing art form.

Contemporary New Zealand Photographers is part of PATAKA's NZ International Arts Festival programme. Open from 11 February - 30 April 2006.

SEASON OPENING
Join us at PATAKA for the opening of our festival season, four major exhibitions celebrating New Zealand, its vibrant culture and extraordinary beauty - Contemporary NZ Photographers, Hei Tiki, Ko Tawa: Taonga from our Ancestral Landscapes and The Terrible Boredom of Paradise. The season opening will include the launch of three books and will be opened by Hon. Mahara Okeroa MP for Te Tai Tonga.

PHOTOGRAPHY FLOOR TALK
Derek Henderson and Neil Pardington talk about their photographic careers and the stories behind the work they currently have on display at PATAKA. Derek Henderson's exhibition The Terrible Boredom of Paradise illustrates a 13,000km road trip across New Zealand with his partner in the summer of 2003/04. Neil Pardington's work has been included in the exhibition Contemporary New Zealand Photographers. Neil will also talk about his current body of work 'The Clinic/Te Whare o Rangiora', in which he tackles the subject of New Zealand's hospitals as a place of life and death.
