Conditions for the transfer of toi iho, the Maori trademark of authenticity and quality, from Creative New Zealand to a new Maori-owned entity – the Transition Toi Iho Foundation (TTIF) have been agreed.
The agreement was reached at a meeting hosted by Te Puni Kokiri and attended by interim TTIF trustees and representatives of Creative New Zealand’s Te Waka Toi.
As part of the agreement Creative New Zealand requires a legal entity to which the toi iho trademarks can be transferred and confirmation that the entity has the capacity to use and develop the brand.
“Given the enthusiasm and desire of the Foundation to continue the life of the brand we are optimistic they will be able to meet these conditions so we can transfer toi iho to them by 30 June 2010,” said Te Waka Toi Chair Darrin Haimona.
The transfer to TIIF would include the toi iho trademark, all associated trademarks and related intellectual property.
Creative New Zealand announced its decision to disinvest in the brand in October 2009.
