A new series of work by artist Rebecca Lee at Lyttelton Art Gallery finds parallels between Mary Shelley's fictional monster and our current environmental crisis.Says the artist: "Victor Frankenstein became obsessed with studying outdated theories about what gives humans their life spark. At college he creates his own 'perfect' human from scavenged body parts, but once it lived, the creature was hideous.

"Victor, disgusted with his creation flees in horror from his monster, and out of rejection and loneliness Frankenstein seeks vengeance against his creator.

"One night, struck by doubts about the morality of his actions, Victor glances out the window to see the monster glaring in at him.

"Does our potential to move forward rely upon our ability to glance beyond societal myths of what we wish we had created to the reality of what may be?

"Or do we just stare out the window horrified at the monster glaring back at us?"
