Although heavily influenced by the Italian neorealists and the French new wave, these filmmakers sought to create an authentic Brazilian cinema. They drew on the country's diverse cultural and religious traditions - indigenous Indian, Afro-Brazilian, Portuguese - and exposed the realities of poverty and exploitation in their country.

Since the 1960s these films have been almost impossible to see, and this will be the first time that most of them have screened in New Zealand.
