It's the biggest opening week tally since Christmas 07 and it happened in just three days! Metallica's Death Magnetic shipped platinum. With official release last Friday, the album outsells all other titles in the Top 20 combined to easily score the #1 spot.
The last albums to have a bigger sales week were The Eagles' Long Road Out Of Eden and Led Zeppelin's Mothership, both in the week prior to Christmas 2007.It gives Metallica their fifth chart-topper here from eight appearances.
It was a humble start for the quartet in May 1989 when And Justice For All opened their account, making #44 for a solitary week. Five years back St Anger also opened in the pole position. Only 1996's Load has held the top slot for longer than a single week, spending two weeks leading the pack.
Silver Into Gold
The digital world follows suit by giving a nod to APRA's Silver Scroll winners OpShop with song One Day. The track rebounds back into the Singles Chart thanks to the publicity surrounding the prestigious win.
It becomes the first winner of the Silver Scroll Award to re-enter the Singles list the very next week, rebounding both on sales and on airplay to re-enter at #14 following an eight-week absence.
It also regains 34 places on the RadioScope100 Airplay Chart, in at #44 this week.
The song first charted at the end of November last year.
New For Newton
Nearly a year since the release of his debut album here, 23-year-old Brit Newton Faulkner finally makes both the Singles and Albums Charts this week.
Already finding success in both his homeland and more recently in Australia, his Hand Built By Robots album and Dream Catch Me single come in at #31 and #38 respectively this week.
Newton topped the UK Albums Chart and has been as high as #5 in Australia. Now a New Zealand promo tour, live gig last Friday and Rove television spot, get the singer-songwriter's sales here moving.
