A stunning project combining music, poetry and visual art, together with the visit of a musical phenomenon are the headline acts for Chamber Music New Zealand's 2009 Concert Season programme.

The programme, 'Kaleidoscopes' features a mix of new artists and return visits by favourite performers in seven events at venues in 10 centres throughout the country.Headlining the season is international musical phenomenon and double Grammy Award winner Pinchas Zukerman who, together with the Zukerman Chamber Players, will tour to six centres in August.
Another major highlight of CMNZ's 2009 season is a very special performance of Haydn's The Seven Last Words from the Cross to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Austrian composer's death. Performed by the New Zealand String Quartet with specially commissioned poetry from Dinah Hawken and images by artist Nigel Brown, The Seven Last Words will be presented in all 10 centres and in Wanaka as part of the 2009 Wanaka Festival of Colour.
This year's programme also plays special tribute to German composer Mendelssohn to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth.
"The 2009 concert season is a real beauty," says Chamber Music New Zealand chief executive Euan Murdoch. "It will whet the appetites of new audiences and satisfy those of our passionately loyal long-time supporters."
Opening the season is New York's Eroica Trio - returning to our shores, six years after their sensational debut New Zealand tour. Each of the three women in the ensemble is an award-winning soloist. The Eroica Trio perform in all 10 centres - Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. Their programme includes Mendelssohn piano trios.
In April, CMNZ presents the Tokyo String Quartet in Auckland and Wellington in June, while New Zealand virtuoso pianist Diedre Irons teams up with five wind players from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra 'Zephyr' to tour to nine centres in June and July.
Young British violinist Jack Liebeck joins acclaimed New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge for a six-centre tour in September performing some of the best known sonatas for violin and piano. Stephen De Pledge will also perform a solo recital tour in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.
Popular Canadians, the St Lawrence String Quartet returns to New Zealand for a third time for an eight-centre tour. And in a spectacular season finale, the quartet join the New Zealand String Quartet to perform Mendelssohn's Octet for Strings - an extraordinary work written when the composer was aged just 16.
"The combined power and panache of the New Zealand and St Lawrence String Quartets is sure to deliver this joyous work in an uplifting season finale," says Euan Murdoch.
"The 2009 programme is packed full of inspiring and profound musical experiences. We're very excited about this season bringing the live intimacy of chamber music to the country presenting 58 individual concerts across 10 centres."
