Trying to wash the lye out of his hair in a train toilet because the sink was frozen, Malcolm X realized that hair is a symbol of oppression or liberation. Advocating conking, bleaching, straightening or "relaxing" (since when is nappy hair uptight?), mainstream culture has tried to convince BlakTinos and our "kin" that we have pelo malo/bad hair. True to its name, BAAD! once again turns condemnation into celebration and empowerment and hosts BAAD! Hair, an all-out celebration of our hair and our hair artists in all our glory.
Work in all media (painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, collage, neo-graphic, video, small installation, braiding, weaving, corn rowing, etc.) is welcome.
CALENDAR
Drop Off: Sunday, October 5th, 2003, 3 -5 pm
Please bring your work(s) or come to register as a hair artist to demonstrate your skill at the grand opening. A mandatory contribution of $10 to offset exhibit costs is due upon delivery of work. No exceptions.
If you would like to be included in the BAAD! registry also please bring: a 8 ½ X 11" color Xerox of a representative work, a CV and your contact info.
Opening: Friday, October 10th, 2003 6-9 pm
Opening will include the inauguration of the exhibit and lockticians and corn rowers demonstrating their skill. So come admire the images and get your hair done!
Closing Party: Saturday, December 13th, 2003
Pick Up: Sunday, December 14th, 2003 from 3-5 pm
You must pick up your work at this time or it will be given away to the neighbors. (No joke.)
Terms and Conditions
Work will be selected by curators Cassandra and Noelia Tejada based on BAAD!ness and artistic merit. Curating and selecting hair artists is the sole responsibility of BAAD! The curators reserve the right to not include work.
BAAD! does not have an insurance policy for theft, damage or dust and, therefore, is not liable. BAAD! is authorized to use work with due credit for publicity and promotion free of charge. Any additional promotion or publicity must cite BAAD! and the BAAD! Eyes Gallery as well as the full name of the exhibit, festival and curators. Work must be delivered ready to hang (Primadonnas need not apply). BAAD! is not responsible for abandoned work. In the event that work is sold, BAAD! will receive a 20% commission.
