The life of legendary Kiwi racing driver Bruce McLaren is to be the subject of a film announced this weekend at the A1GP race in Taupo.

Barrie Osborne, who produced The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has confirmed he will produce the US$100 million film.

He was killed in 1970 when his Can Am car crashed during testing at the Goodwood Circuit in England. Team McLaren is one of the most successful in the history of Formula 1 racing.

Co-producer Michael Garlick says the film is already attracting attention offshore, while McLaren's daughter Amanda points out that few Kiwis realise her father was a New Zealander because the team was based in England.

The film's advisers include McLaren's friend and fellow racing driver Chris Amon, as well as school friend and leader of the Progressive Party Jim Anderton. The film also has the blessing of McLaren's family, who are thrilled the movie is being made.

Wellington screenwriter Matthew Grainger is developing the script, while Dan Hennah - who won an Oscar for his work on The Lord of the Rings - will be production designer.
