Erupt Events are gearing up to host the inaugural Big Day Art event in Taupo.

Held at the Great Lake Centre (from 10am to 4pm) on Saturday 10 March and free to attend, the Big Day Art will showcase the depth and scale of local Taupo talent across a variety of artistic genres.

Held at the Great Lake Centre (from 10am to 4pm) on Saturday 10 March and free to attend, the Big Day Art will showcase the depth and scale of local Taupo talent across a variety of artistic genres.

“We’re thrilled with the response to this new event,” said General Manager of Erupt Events, Kylie Hawker. “We’ve got an incredible mix of different groups and individuals who will be sharing their skills, talent and enthusiasm with the Taupo community for free.”

The Big Day Art maximises the different spaces available at the Great Lake Centre with a variety of performances and events scheduled throughout the day.

In the Theatre, audiences will be entertained by live music, dance and poetry presented by some of Taupo’s many and varied performance artists.

“We’ve got such an eclectic line up confirmed,” said Ms Hawker. “From school bands to classical music, modern dance to poetry, and everything in between! The Theatre will be open from 10am to 4pm with performances scheduled throughout the day so there will always be something to see.”

The Main Hall will be transformed into a Creative Expo, with over 30 different exhibitors including fine art, photography, music groups, wood turners, weavers and paper artists.

“The Expo is a great chance to check out the many different groups offering fellowship, classes and workshops,” explains Ms Hawker. “It’s a wonderful way to explore your creative side and maybe pick up a new hobby or join a new group.”

As well as the Expo, Big Day Art will also provide some hands-on opportunities to participate, including workshops and talks.

“Thanks to the enthusiasm of our groups, we are able to offer some hands-on workshops and chances to try your hand at a new craft, including scrap-booking, wood-turning, ceramics, painting and ukulele playing,” said Ms Hawker. “Plus we are honoured to have been selected as an official NZ Book Month event, and will be hosting Tina Shaw and Susan Brocker who will be holding free ‘Readers & Writers’ sessions where you can meet the authors and hear them talk about their work, and in particular their connection to Taupo.”

A key objective in developing and delivering the Big Day Art event is to provide an inspirational opportunity for Taupo youth to explore their creative side and learn more about the potential of developing their hobby into a career. As part of this intent, Erupt Events will be hosting previous Youth Arts Scholarship Winner, Chelsea Dolman, who will be performing and presenting a talk about how winning a Youth Arts Scholarship has propelled her on her journey as a professional singer.

The full programme (including session times for performances and workshops) will be printed in Taupo Times on Friday 9 March, and will be available online from Monday 5 March.
