With less than a month to go until entries close, stunning entries are starting to be received for the 2010 BDO Northland Painting and Drawing Award.
“The Award was set up to celebrate the rich diversity of artists residing here in the North. It will provide them with a professional environment in which to promote their work and in the process gain, often much needed, recognition” said Tania McInnes, event coordinator.
Interest has been strong, with nearly 120 entry forms been sent out to people from Wellsford north. 80 pieces will be chosen by guest judge John Gow, co-director of the John Leech Gallery and the Gow Langsford Gallery, Auckland.
A significant first prize of $6,000 is on offer, with a People’s Choice Award of $2,000. Both awards are proudly sponsored by BDO Bay of Islands Chartered Accountants and Advisors. Two highly commended works, sponsored by Living Nature and The French Art Shop, will also be chosen.
Part of the exhibition is the The Rona Swallow Art Award. The Award is open to students in the wider Bay of Islands area that are currently in year 12 or 13 and are going onto tertiary education in the arts. The first prize of $500 comes from a fund specifically set aside from proceeds of Rona Swallow’s work and is to support young artists.
The public will be able to view the exhibition at The Centre in Kerikeri which will run from 15 to 21 November 2010.
“We encourage people to come and view the works. This will be a wonderful way to learn about and enjoy the diverse talent here in Northland, with the opportunity to purchase works. The public will also be responsible for voting on their favourite work. The piece with the highest vote will receive the People’s Choice Award”, said Tania.
ArtsXL, host of the event, are also looking for some wonderful volunteers to help man the exhibition. People interested are encouraged to contact the event co-ordinator to register their interest.
Entries close at 5pm, 15 October. For further information please contact the event coordinator, Tania McInnes, email northlandartscomp2010@xtra.co.nz or call 021 344 870.
