Australian performance artist Zjamal Xanitha is coming to New Zealand this weekend to give her workshop Land Dreaming Body Awakening at Soul. Zjamal employs techniques which access the deep inner awareness in subtle physiological states toward an integration of mind, body and spirit. Her work integrates dance, music, text, storytelling and ritual in visionary environments. We will practice listening deeply to ourselves and to each other, being willing to be moved, guided by our senses and our instincts. Our journeys will include movement, guided meditation, deep ecology practices, journaling, story-telling, personal and collective ritual. We will co-create an atmosphere of support where we witness, reflect, engage and interact with each other. All our voyages will be guided by our sense of play. As we explore nesting, migrating, homing and meandering we find our intrinsic connection to the patterns of nature, and the human place in the creativity of the Earth. In both new and familiar territory we will discover the spirit of place and the sacred sites in our bodies. We will ground our experiences in the mythology of land, in the inner and outer terrains of memory and environment.

Facilitator

Zjamal Xanitha is a choreographer, performer, teacher, therapist and ritualist who has been teaching dance, improvisation, ecological practice and ritual for 30 years in professional, academic and community settings. She has presented her work in Europe, the U.S.A, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies. For seven years she was on the faculty of the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam, Holland and for three years on the faculty in the Philosophy and Religion Department of the California Institute of Integral Studies, U.S.A. Since moving to Australia in 1998 she has been teaching workshops nationwide, forgetting everything she knew about earth-based spirituality, and enjoying starting over again, taught anew by this powerful environment. Zjamal is also a Gestalt Psychotherapist in private practice and teaches Somatic Psychotherapy at two Gestalt Institutes in Australia.
