Despite the growing vibrancy of Auckland's improvised and experimental music scene, stable groupings of musicians are still a relative rarity. Audible 3 are now in their fifth year together and, following an appearance at the Alt.Music Festival in July, they will soon stage a unique sonic event to mark the release of their first CD.

Rather than "electronic musicians" it'd be more accurate to say that the members of Audible 3 - Paul Winstanley, Marc Chesterman and John Kennedy - are musical improvisers who have gravitated to electronic instruments. The experience of the group members has collectively encompassed various shades of rock, jazz and traditional music, as well as music for film, theatre and dance. Their grounding in more conventional forms of music gives them a fresh approach to electronic music. As John Kennedy explains: "Samplers and drum machines are employed extensively in contemporary popular & dance music, but they're not usually thought of as instruments. We take the technology and literally play with it."

Audible 3 music is deconstructed, filtered and reconstructed; resulting in reorientation of somewhat familiar musical elements over elongated beds of sound. Far from abstract, the trio's music abounds with familiar everyday sounds, absorbing pulses and unassuming tones woven into an organic continuum. " - audiences respond quite positively to the unpredictability and the sonic drama that results. It's not our aim to shock or assault listeners" says John Kennedy

Thanks to Auckland City's Creative Communities Fund the group will be able to workshop their music in the Grey Lynn Library Hall for an entire afternoon before giving an evening concert. This process will be open to the public for several hours, giving a chance to hear and see how sounds evolve and are designed into a working performance using largely improvised methods. This extends to environmental elements like the placement of speakers and use of moving sounds. The result will be a mix of sonic sculpture and intuitive exploration.

Two pieces have been developed for this performance. Make Over consists of a 20-minute improvisation, reworking tracks from the Audible 3 CD. For Light Metal, the only sound source is cymbals. Expect an extended excursion into various atmospheres inherent in these marvelous discs of metal - shimmerings, bursts of radiance, golden tones, ominous textures and meditative interludes.

Says John Kennedy: "We hope the afternoon will be an opportunity for people to interact with our music in a more informal setting. Curiosity about sound is a very basic human impulse and this will be a good chance to indulge it."
