$15/10In Martin Crimps 1997 theatre masterpiece Attempts on Her Life, we are introduced to the character of Anne through the eyes of her parents, friends, art critics, lawyers and film producers. We never actually meet Anne, but are given a superficial and contradictory view of her life through a multitude of characters that raise as many questions about the protagonist as they provide answers.

Is Anne youthful idealist or a terrorist threat? Is she a world traveller, a refugee, the girl next door, a porn star, a type of car or something decidedly more sinister? This is an attempt on her life.

Attempts on Her Life, subtitled "17 Scenarios for the Theatre" is a uniquely challenging text. Though filled with sharp and witty dialogue, the lines aren't ascribed to particular characters and take place in undefined locations, so it's entirely up to the director to decide how to shape the piece and how many actors to involve.

This is Crimp at his iciest and enigmatic best: the dark and savage writing weaves an intriguing web and cuts through the façade of domesticity and civility in one of the most ambitious new plays of the 1990s.
