ARTSPACE announces the appointment of new Director, Brian Butler. Butler comes to Auckland's leading contemporary art space from Los Angeles, where he has worked as a gallerist and publisher for the past 15 years. Some people may remember him from his presentation at Spark in 2003.

ARTSPACE announces the appointment of new Director, Brian Butler. Butler comes to Auckland's leading contemporary art space from Los Angeles, where he has worked as a gallerist and publisher for the past 15 years. Some people may remember him from his presentation at Spark in 2003.

Since setting up in the front room of his house in 1991, 1301PE, Butler's Los Angeles gallery has worked with a wide group of cutting edge contemporary artists including Fiona Banner, General Idea, Michael Asher, Angela Bulloch, Meg Cranston, Jack Goldstein, Jorge Pardo, Diana Thater, Phillipe Pareno, Paul McCarthy, Martin Kippenberger, Jason Rhoades, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Mike Kelley.

Brian Butler has been eager to return to New Zealand since his first visit in 2003. "Not only did I see a country rich in culture, but hungry for an opportunity to experience art." Butler brings with him a wealth of experience and enthusiasm for consolidating ARTSPACE as New Zealand's premier institution for contemporary art, as well as positioning New Zealand artists in the International art world.

ARTSPACE farewells Tobias Berger, our current Director, leaving in April to take up the position of Director at Para/site, a contemporary art gallery in Hong Kong.

As Brian Butler will join ARTSPACE in September, an opportunity has been created for an international curator to undertake a three month residency. This is a chance to shape the programme and experience the local art scene, and for New Zealand to have an injection of curatorial activity for a short, sharp period.

The curatorial resident will be announced by the end of April.
