Ngatai Taepa (Te Arawa, Te Ati Awa, Newland) asks his audience to take a journey with him - from night to light - at Tinakori Gallery this coming Thursday. His exhibition, Haeata (the Maori word for dawn), explores concepts of birth, life, knowledge, growth and evolution, through reference to Maori mythology. Haeata is Taepa's third consecutive exhibition at the gallery featuring his distinctive pou, which are constructed from PVC pipe. Ngatai Taepa (Te Arawa, Te Ati Awa, Newland) asks his audience to take a journey with him - from night to light - at Tinakori Gallery this coming Thursday. His exhibition, Haeata (the Maori word for dawn), explores concepts of birth, life, knowledge, growth and evolution, through reference to Maori mythology. Haeata is Taepa's third consecutive exhibition at the gallery featuring his distinctive pou, which are constructed from PVC pipe.Although the artworks are individual entities they will hang together as an installation, portraying the transition from darkness to sunrise.

This evolution of existence is a macrocosm for the daily progression from dark to light. It can also be seen to represent an individual moving from ignorance to knowledge. The viewer can witness these transitions through Taepa's use of colour. Each pou leads us one step closer to dawn/awareness, which makes the passage a physical as well as literal process.
