The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra continues to broaden its search for the next generation of conductors when it becomes the first New Zealand orchestra to join Symphony Australia’s Conductor Development program.

The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra continues to broaden its search for the next generation of conductors when it becomes the first New Zealand orchestra to join Symphony Australia’s Conductor Development program.

Adding a trans-Tasman touch, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra joins the finest orchestras in the region, including the Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras and Orchestra Victoria, to provide guidance to aspiring young conductors through courses under the tutelage of highly talented and experienced conductors from across the globe.

Symphony Australia welcomes the APO’s involvement after finding much in common with the orchestra’s longstanding commitment to nurture new orchestral maestros.

The course replaces and augments the APO’s own conducting workshops which began in 1987.

“It’s great to be involved with our Australian colleagues for the betterment of conductors in this part of the world,” says Barbara Glaser, Chief Executive of the APO.

“Not only is this a wonderful new opportunity for New Zealand talent, we’re also excited about giving young Australian conductors a chance to experience an orchestra ‘off shore’.”

Previous participants in the Program have gone on to opportunities to study and work internationally.
