Animal/Impulse - Lecture Series

Ever wondered about what makes us different from animals and how do we describe that?   What about the conflicting impulses between consciousness and body?

In September and October, a series of eight lectures under the theme of Animal/Impulse will be hosted jointly by the School of Art and Design, Auckland University of Technology and the School of Architecture, Auckland University, and has
been designed to discuss those issues and more.

Ever wondered about what makes us different from animals and how do we describe that?   What about the conflicting impulses between consciousness and body?

In September and October, a series of eight lectures under the theme of Animal/Impulse will be hosted jointly by the School of Art and Design, Auckland University of Technology and the School of Architecture, Auckland University, and has
been designed to discuss those issues and more.

central problematic for contemporary cult ure and theory. Animal/Impulse will raise questions regarding the idea of the human/animal divide in Western thought.

Questions such as: What are the formations/formulations that discipline the body and impulses from outside? How are the natural forces that are, but fortuitous bundles, controlled and striated in the animal/person/body?

These are philosophical and ethical questions that go to the root not just of what we think but of who we are.
Animal/Impulse lectures offer a set of co-ordinates for
exploring how these issues are represented in and through contemporary architecture and related arts.
