The term 'wonderland' is now a commonplace term in the English language and one which refers to a marvelous, imaginary place or a place with dream like qualities. Artist and designer Valentin Tinc takes the fantasy aspect of Alice in Wonderland and applies it to the gallery spaces at SOCA gallery.
Tinc will divide the entire gallery up into five distinct spaces and themes through the use of a strong colour scheme. In doing so, Tinc creates a process of discovery and wonder throughout the gallery space. White - Romance, purity and innocence
Red - Eros, attraction and sensuality
Silver - Narcissicism, self-admiration and self-centredness
Black - Romanticism, mystery and 'the hero'
Gold - Unification and unconditional 'agape' (love)
Each space and theme will have a matching lighting scheme, corresponding works of art by artists such as Cristina Popovici, Piera McArthur and Stephen Marty Welch, as well as digital recreations of famous works by Valentin Tinc along with Tinc's signature porcelain stag heads which is where the concept of the exhibition originated.
Valentin Tinc and his wife, artist Cristina Popovici immigrated to New Zealand in 2000. In the 9 years prior to that he had honed his craft as a fine artist and furniture designer in his homeland of Transylvania, Romania. The combination of fine art knowledge and furniture design principles has produced truly unique, perfectly balanced furniture compositions.
Drawing on the environment and culture of his adopted country, Valentin's work uses organic curves, familiar shapes and visually intriguing compositions to express his creativity.
