Written for the stage and television, Abigail's Party is a suburban situation- comedy and a satire on the aspirations and tastes of the new middle class that emerged in 1970s Britain.The Party' was developed through improvisations rather than written in the usually accepted sense and although reflecting an earlier time the aspirations and frustrations of suburban life are just as relevant today.

Always trying to impress her guests, Beverley Moss invites new neighbours Angela & Tony together with divorced neighbour Sue, over for a few drinks. However, Sue's daughter Abigail is holding her own party at home to which her mother was definitely not invited!

The loud music, the 'snogging' glimpsed through a window and the contrast with the pretentious upper-class role being played out by Beverley almost inevitably kicks her party into high gear. However, in a drink-fuelled environment her gathering almost inevitably deteriorates and a growing belligerent tension pitches to an unexpected climax.

All of the obsession, prejudices, fears and petty competitiveness of the protagonists are exposed.

Mike Leigh is perhaps best-known for his films and Abigail's Party was the first of his plays focussing on the desperately funny tragedies of working-class life.

Leading Shoreside performers Victoria van Raalte, Stephen Jury and Marty van Iersel are joined by Rebekah Chambers and Rachel Plank to display the special characterisations required.
