Marshall Smith started as a singer/songwriter and took his first demo album off to London (recorded at BFM). He worked in the business side of the music industry and played in bands, then discovered how satisfying and financially viable it was writing music for film and TV.

With business partner Tom Fox, their business The Sound Room, focuses on composition, production and song writing. They work for international clients including the Discovery Channel, the BBC and Morgan Freeman as well as local clients, Natural History NZ,  and many different NZ film makers as well as other organisations.

What projects are you currently working on?

There always seems to be something in the pipeline. Currently Tom and I are working on [amongst other things]:

  • Crackheads - a seriously funky feature film score for this independent feature film currently in post-production here in Auckland - Directed by Tim Tsiklauri

  • Stars In Her Eyes - in collaboration with ethno-musicoligist Jyoshna La Trobe work is underway for the score for this NZ independent feature film, directed by Athina Tsoulis and produced by Angela Hicks of Ample Films

  • Work on the score for the beautiful and poignant short film Taegeuk is currently underway. Directed by Dr. Sapna Samant for Holy Cow Productions

  • Music theme written for beautiful Margaret Mahy children's story 'Footsteps Through The Fog' - featuring the violin prowess of Jess Hinden which is being released as an e-book.

  • Audio Network have commissioned an album featuring the sounds of Aotearoa and the Pacific.

  • Music for a video series of informational pieces on early childhood development for the NZ Brainwave Trust.

Why I gave to The Big Idea.

For many years the Big Idea has been our forum, our notice board, our networking and meeting place - and all for free!  It's really incredible just how much these guys do to get in there and support our artistic community throughout Aotearoa.  We have got countless jobs, gigs, commissions and contacts using The Big Idea and I heartily recommend it to any artists who have yet to discover this goldmine right there on the internet!!
