What’s The Big Idea? The answer is in the title!
Here’s some inspiration from creative makers, managers, innovators, movers and shakers we interviewed last year who shared their big ideas. Read the quotes below or scroll through the image gallery above.
We look forward to hearing and sharing more of your Big Ideas in 2017!
Splore arts curator Anna Hanson
My big idea is to continue to work collaboratively with individuals who are committed to using their skills to benefit communities. It would be cool to make some art, have a holiday and learn to tango in Argentina as well!
Visual communicator Dominika Marcisz
I am working on MindsAware which is a website and an app for people dealing with anxiety. I am working with other professionals and creatives to develop an app and to create a community around mental wellness in Auckland.
Singing teacher, musician and arts administrator Rose Blake
‘Instinct’! It’s that part of you that senses creatively what feels right. Use it!
Actor and archaeologist Beatrice Hunter
Achieve a satisfying balance of both my activities and give more recognition and importance to my creative side.
Italian lighting designer Fabiana Piccioli
Moving back to Rome, trying to rebalance the family life and the work life, London drives me into a working machine.
Auckland City Limits Festival Ngahere artist Judy Darragh and architect Sue Hillery
Judy: To have some BIG ideas!!!!
Sue: To initiate a long term project that I’ve been brewing for the last two years – that involves collaboration with about six to ten people, and determination. It’s a bit top secret at the moment!
WOMAD NZ event director Chris Herlihy
I think I will keep a diary to note all the great things that happen to me.
Councillor and dance supporter Josh Wharehinga

For dance? Help develop hip hop and street dance on a local, regional and maybe national level. In general? World peace. Coz why not?
DANZ chief executive Anton Carter
Be visible, engaging and make an impact.
Solicitor and comedian Nik Bruce-Smith
Plan not to plan.
Billy T Award 2016 nominee Alice Brine
The big helicopter flight with lots of helicopters.
NZ Music Month manager Simon Woods
I guess my big idea is to continue to focus on the little things, NZ Music Month is about local musicians, performing local music in local spaces to locals…
NZ On Air broadcast promotions executive Jeff Newton
To find a way to make my children listen when their father asks them to pick their shit up!
Music manager Scott Maclachlan
Keep your ideas to yourself…..
Peter Baker distribution and aggregation
Enjoy the moment. I think it’s too easy to get distracted by stuff that doesn’t really matter!
Dave Munro from Brent Eccles Entertainment
That's a tough one to answer, I live in a world where I can’t tell you what I have planned until it's announced. That said, I want to look at constant streamlining of what I do, better integration of planning on a digital level, after all that's the world we live in, what I do needs to be entirely transferable from my desktop to the mobile phone; both mine and the artists. We are partially there, but there are a lot of systems that can and still being integrated to our phones and tablets.
Natalie Maria Clark - dancer, choreographer, director, producer, actor and poet.
Let’s mingle amongst and between creative communities much, much more! Let’s support art forms that aren’t our immediate circle, and collaborate with other artists to create something new and exciting. Let’s support each other, instead of competing. Let’s talk to the general public and our friends outside the arts sector about the arts in a generous and inclusive way. As Aristotle said, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And those parts are already great!
Time travel.
Fortune Theatre artistic director Jonathon Hendry
A regular daily arts spot on what remains of prime-time TV news (yeah right).
Loading Docs executive producer Julia Parnell
Now is the time to think outside the square of traditional funding and distribution models. I might not know exactly how to do that commercially yet but I do know that Loading Docs is a big step in the right direction.
A new symphony (No.5) that explores simplicity, naivety, and the idea of revealing one’s true face.
Baycourt Community & Arts Centre manager Megan Peacock Coyle
Our focus over the next 12 months is to grow our new initiatives, Kids Week and IYSFF NZ Regional Competition for 2017/18. Continue to collaborate with our performing arts community and sector and we are very excited to be involved in Tour Makers National Audience Development Strategy. This strategy will see venues in New Zealand develop skills that enable us to turn our audience members into advocates of our venues, but also advocates of the arts in New Zealand!
Theatre producer, publicist and marketer Sharu Delilkan
It pains me to see the amount of effort that goes into original theatre for a sometime fleeting run in Auckland. Through Sharu Loves Hats I would love to extend the life of these gems through national and international tours.
My big idea this year is to grow my audience, to grow my artwork, get some work into shops around Wellington and to figure out how to go about getting some work into a gallery or something similar.
SCAPE Public Art managing curator Heather Galbraith
It’s still developing at this stage! I am learning from the 2016 project... I am hoping to be able to bring together existing and new works, about the same number of artists, but to be able to have a more nuanced engagement with sites, given we have additional time to brew the season.
Auckland Museum digital experience manager Nils Pokel
Where do I start?! To stay on topic, I am expecting to see more serious applications of AR and VR, digital experiences that transcend beyond pure entertainment value and fundamentally change the way work, communicate, live. Also, I think Mixed Reality will start to become more prevalent with a number of headsets announced to be released soon (Magic Leap, anyone?).
I for myself plan to devote more time to my bees for a good dose of Real Reality – because it’s all about balance ☺
Australian Centre for the Moving Image chief experience officer Seb Chan
I’m a little bereft of big new ideas in the wake of recent events. Small ideas, widely connected seem to be more sensible proposition right now. That and an ongoing commitment to social justice.
Playwright and actor Lorae Parry
Definitely a holiday or two!!!
Producer of transmedia project 'The Zingoshi Chronicles' Bridget Ellis-Pegler

We have a team of absolute superstars in place; the talent astounds me. My dream for 2017 is to secure funding and take development to the next stage. I’m working on the first book and we’re hoping to make a prototype for the game, next.
TAPAC executive director Sally-Anne Kerr
Consolidate the building blocks for future TAPAC growth.
