Over the last 12 months RDU98.5FM has responded to loss of premise and business by building an entirely new platform from which to broadcast. We now transmit daily out of a 4 ton truck, from a number of locations each week, on campus, in the city and on occasion, out standing in a field.

Over the last 12 months RDU98.5FM has responded to loss of premise and business by building an entirely new platform from which to broadcast. We now transmit daily out of a 4 ton truck, from a number of locations each week, on campus, in the city and on occasion, out standing in a field.

The RDUnit has become a surprisingly transformative way to broadcast radio and we are excited about our prospects for the coming year.

But having to rebuild from scratch comes with a huge set of challenges and we are grateful that NZOA has been able to provide us the opportunity to produce something meaningful, something engaging to both our musical community and our listenership. A Flat City is essentially a sound archive of creative responses to our experiences over the last 12months.

A Flat City – 13 episode documentary beginning on the day, the time, 1 year after that quake hit and took life here in our flat city. Thereafter we will be running each episode at 3pm on Saturdays and replaying weeknights where appropriate on specialist shows.

A Flat City records the impressions and experiences of Christchurch’s creative community following the February 2011 Earthquakes. Threaded with musical selections, influences and responses the stories convey a range of thoughts on what’s next for their creative futures in Christchurch. A Flat City explores the effect of a natural disaster on a section of Canterbury society that has been given little attention by the mainstream media, recording experiences and reactions of musicians, venue owners, and engineers across the genres.

Covering 13 episodes, A Flat City covers the emotional, social, financial and creative aspects of the disaster, highlighting the creative responses of those affected, and discusses the rebuilding process from the alternative/creative community’s perspective.
