The 11th annual Rialto Channel 48Hours furious filmmaking competition winners have been announced at the 2013 Grand Final event hosted on Tuesday 16 July at the mighty Civic Theatre.
It all began with over 800 teams from across New Zealand who entered the competition to create a short film in just 48 hours. Films are judged by an international all star judging panel which includes Scott Foundas (Chief Critic at Variety), Lodge Kerrigan (Homeland director) and Scott Walker (Frozen Ground director). This grand final event sees one team crowned the 2013 Grand Champion. The winners are awarded a prize pool of around $50,000 from NZ Film Commission and Wingnut Films and services.
The big prize of the night – The Grand National Champion prize was awarded to team Traces Of Nut for their short The Sleeping Plot.
From the judging panel Scott Walker (Director of upcoming Nic Cage/ John Cusak thriller Frozen Ground) comments on the The Sleeping Plot “I loved the story, original, manipulative (I fell for that kid), funny, and clever. High production values made everything feel smooth and it looked professional. Great wee story, well told. All the little portends as the film went along were great, making a second viewing really rewarding."
The Runner Up prize went to team Chess Club for I Got Robots and team Nightowls with short Autocraniotomous that took out third place.
Rialto Channel 48Hours are thrilled to announce that the Grand Champion The Sleeping Plot and the Best Animated film winner Sleep Clinic have been selected from hundreds of short films from around the world to compete at the prestigious Fantastic Fest in Austin, the #1 genre festival in North America.
All 14 finalists’ short films were screened at the Grand Finals to an enthusiastic crowd, followed by the anticipated awards ceremony to crown the National Grand Champion and the 22 other deserving award categories.
