On Thursday 10th November 2005, the Arts Foundation of New Zealand announced the five recipients of the 2005 Laureate Awards during a gala performance and ceremony at the Civic Theatre in Auckland. The Arts Foundation's Principal Sponsor, Forsyth Barr, supported the evening as Presenting Sponsor of the Ceremony.
The 2005 Laureates are Neil Ieremia, Bill Manhire, Ronnie Van Hout, Simon O'Neill and Julia Morison.

The 2005 Laureates are Neil Ieremia, Bill Manhire, Ronnie Van Hout, Simon O'Neill and Julia Morison.

At $ ¼ Million - $50,000 per artist - this prestigious award is the largest cash arts prize pool in New Zealand and the only private award to consider all art forms. "The Trustees were thrilled to be able give our Laureates $250,000 at this event," said Richard Cathie, Chairman of the Arts Foundation, "it also marks a milestone for the Arts Foundation, we have now given distributed over $1 million to the arts. The Laureate Awards are intended to make a significant difference to the careers of some of our finest mid-career artists."
2005 Laureates:
Neil Ieremia - Choreographer and Dancer
Born in Porirua, Founder, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Black Grace, and unquestionably one of New Zealand's most accomplished choreographers.
Bill Manhire - Writer
A multiple award winning writer and poet, Bill is a significant figure in New Zealand poetry and literature - not only as director of the internationally acclaimed creative writing course at Victoria University, but also through his work as a critic, anthologist, and broadcaster, and in his appearances at writing festivals around the world.
Julia Morison - Visual Artist
Born in Pahiatua and with a career spanning 3 decades, Morison has exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand and overseas. A recipient of many awards, she lives in Christchurch and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Painting at the University of Canterbury's School of Fine Arts.
Simon O'Neill - Opera Singer
Appearing with leading opera companies, conductors and orchestras around the world, and with a number of international awards under his belt, Ashburton born Simon O'Neill is quickly establishing himself as one of the most sought after tenors.
Ronnie Van Hout - Visual Artist
Born in Christchurch. Ronnie Van Hout has been artist in residence at five institutions both in New Zealand and overseas, resulting in numerous exhibitions around the world. In 2004, he was a finalist in the Walters Prize Art Award.
